Catalog description

This course provides students with an introduction to topics at the intersection of bioethics and law. It provides students with a platform to reflect upon ethical, social, and legal issues that arise in biomedicine and biomedical research. Topics to be covered may include the following: issues related to the moral and legal status of early human life (e.g., laws governing stem cell research, abortion); assisted reproductive technologies (which raise issues such as paternity, custody, safety, and access); issues concerning the end of life (e.g., the legal definition of "death," the withholding or refusal of life-sustaining medical treatment, and physician-assisted suicide); the distribution of organs for transplants; the law and ethics of human subjects research; and issues related to genetic testing and engineering. Credit Hour : 1-3
