Applied Projects for Journalism and Strategic Communication - Honors

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of journalism and strategic communication practice.This course allows students to build on the basic principles and skills learned in the fundamentals courses through hands-on projects. Students will work individually and in teams to complete four projects throughout the semester. Two projects focus on journalism/news and two focus on strategic communication. Students will learn how communication differs depending on their role and their audience. Additionally, students will be challenged to think critically about how journalism and strategic communication intersect and overlap, yet remain distinct in today's complex media landscape. Finally, this course will help students better identify an academic major in the journalism school, as well as informing students' individual career interests and plans through an independent research project that spans the entire semester. The class puts into practice all of the skills learned in Writing Fundamentals and Visual Fundamentals, including (but not limited to): Reporting; Interviewing; Proper framing; Proper use of lighting, stability and sound; Using sequencing and matched action; Creativity; Pacing; Use of multiple platforms; AP style; News writing; Reporting; Interviewing; Story structure; Story boarding/scripting; Generating creative ideas; Research; Strategic thinking; Persuasive writing; Use of multiple platforms; Judgment; Attribution; Meeting deadlines. Graded on A-F basis only. Credit Hour s : 3 Prerequisites: JOURN 1200 and JOURN 1300 with C- or better; Honors eligibility required
