Empires have been the predominant organizing political structure in modern world history (c. 1500-2000). Yet historians mostly structure historical inquiry around nations. This graduate class seeks to redress this imbalance by acquainting students with a diverse selection of the modern Anglophone historiography on empire, as well as giving them the opportunity to develop their own research project on an aspect of imperial history of their choosing. This class is reading and writing intensive, as should be expected of graduate students. Graded on A-F basis only. Credit Hour s : 3
