Roman Art and Archaeology

Catalog description

This course offers a general survey of material culture in the Roman world from the beginnings of Rome in the Iron Age (9th century BCE) to the rise of Constantinople (4th century CE). Students will apply archaeological and historical evidence to reconstruct the long-term development of the culture, society, economy and religion of Rome and the Roman provinces, analyzing ancient processes of urbanization, state formation, imperial expansion and collapse and appraising their relevance to today's world.
