Catalog description

Credits: 1 This course is designed to educate students about the alternative route processes through which they may gain certification to teach in grades 7-12 from the Mississippi Department of Education and to prepare them to take the Social Studies Content Knowledge Praxis Exam required for licensure. Students will compare the traditional and alternate routes to teacher certification in Mississippi with a special focus on the Master of Arts in Teaching alternative route. Students will learn about the Social Studies Praxis Exam, including content covered, delivery format, and testing environment options and criteria. The course will explore test-prep resources and will guide students in the creation of personalized study plans and timelines. Students will complete a series of practice tests and self-assessments exercises. In addition, the course will provide pre-service teacher professional development, including exposure to the Mississippi Council on the Social Studies and instruction in how to search for relevant job openings and prepare materials for job applications. The course is designed to serve students majoring in History, Political Science, and other social studies fields, but students in other disciplines attempting secondary education are welcome to join this class
