Catalog description

Identification, classification, and description of minerals and rocks within the context of the evolution of Earth's mineralogy from chondritic simplicity to Phanerozoic complexity. Physical, chemical, structural, and optical properties of minerals; chemical and instrumental analysis of minerals; mineral associations. Description and classification of rocks based on mineralogy, textures, and chemical compositions; and study of the genesis of rocks, ore deposits, and mineral products of weathering and alteration through laboratory investigations. Field trips. Lecture, 2 hours; laboratory, 4 hours. Prerequisite: GEOL 105 .
