Catalog description

This course will provide an introduction to UAS-based remote sensing operations with an emphasis on technologies, remotely-operated aircraft systems, and sensor types commonly utilized in UAS-remote sensing. This is a hands-on course in which students will assemble and code small UAS systems early in the course and then explore, through a variety of interactive activities, several different remote sensing tools, including: Photography (photogrammetry), LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), infrared and multispectral imaging, ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle - underwater) operations, as well as GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) technologies. We will also explore satellite-based remote sensing datasets and do significant missions planning coursework. Students will plan and execute a project with the technologies possessed by the Geosciences Program as a significant part of this course and learn about opportunities for startups in this space.
