Catalog description

Engineering Materials introduces the fundamental relationship between the internal structure of materials and their resulting mechanical, electrical, thermal, and chemical properties. The course covers the basic concepts of atomic bonding, crystalline structures, imperfections, and diffusion in solids. We'll examine the four major material classes-metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites-detailing their unique characteristics and common applications. Key topics include understanding phase diagrams, analyzing mechanical behavior through stress-strain relationships, and exploring the effects of processing methods (such as heat treatment and alloying) on material performance. Upon completion, you'll be able to identify, classify, and select appropriate materials for engineering applications based on their structure, processing, and required performance criteria. Prerequisite: ENGR 202 . Corequisites: CHEM 121 and ENGR 251 .
