This course provides an introductory exploration of the multi-faceted discipline of sociology, the study of individual and group processes, patterns and social systems, and their effects on individuals, organizations, and society. The course emphasizes the fundamental theories of sociology, encouraging students to critically examine familiar worlds from new perspectives. Topics covered include culture and media; socioeconomic inequalities; deviance and crime; research methods and research ethics; and inequalities of race, ethnicity and gender. Through this course, the student should gain an increased understanding of the field of sociology, an enhanced ability to think critically, and the ability to apply sociological principles to everyday life.
