Philosophy of Gender and Feminism

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the concepts of gender and feminism, through both historical and philosophical lenses. Students will look at some of the origins of the concepts of gender or feminism, when and where they originated, how they spread, and what social and philosophical obstacles they faced. Students will also critically analyze how gendered concepts have shaped society, culture, and education. This class will address critical questions, such as: What does it mean for genders to be “equal”? How does our own gender identity influence how we perceive the world? What types of insights can feminism bring to how we approach science? What types of gender roles should we adopt for ourselves and what should we want for future generations? What role do biases play in our lives and what can/should we do about them?
