Catalog description

In this course students examine the significance of family, as described by the client, and cultural influences on one’s perception of health and wellness, use of health-related resources, and selection of appropriate interventions. The concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility are explored. Students reflect on implicit and explicit personal biases and examine the impact of bias on establishing a therapeutic relationship and the provision of quality and effective care. A key focus of this course is recognizing the importance of partnering with the client as “expert” related to family and/or cultural care needs and preferences. Students explore means to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion among healthcare providers and within healthcare organizations.
