Pathophysiology and Pharmacology I

Catalog description

This course is the first in a two-part series to provide students with an understanding of disease process including etiology, manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment modalities. The course aligns understanding of the effects of drugs on the physiological systems. Central concepts of pathophysiology and homeostasis provide the foundation for understanding alterations in cellular, hematopoietic, cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine functions, fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, and genetics. Central concepts in pharmacology provide the foundation for understanding specific drug mechanisms of action, safe administration and monitoring for potential adverse effects, drug interactions, evaluation, and drug-related patient education. Drugs affecting the autonomic nervous, immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and hematopoietic systems, and coagulation pathways, fluid and electrolyte balance, and cancer treatment are discussed.
