Introduction to Professional Nursing Practice (PBEL)

Catalog description

This course provides an overview of the key events, thought leaders, issues, ideas, and social factors that have shaped and continue to influence professional nursing practice. It introduces students to the values and ethics that are a part of nursing’s social contract. Students examine how personal values and implicit bias can impact nursing’s commitment to creating a just, equitable, accessible health care system. Emphasis is placed on nursing roles and standards of professional practice. Students are introduced to legal and ethical issues, self-care concepts, and how theory helps to develop nursing knowledge and guide practice. The role of critical thinking, clinical reasoning, clinical judgment, and the nursing process as the basis for nursing practice are explored. Students examine health-related issues and create solutions through collaboration with peers and supportive resources to address the problems. Appropriate use of APA style and format in scholarly writing is reinforced.
