Catalog description

This course covers fundamental concepts regarding the vibration of mechanical systems. The course begins with a review of modeling single degree of freedom (SDOF) vibratory systems. Afterwards the course explores the response of both damped and undamped SDOF systems due to initial conditions, harmonic forcing, impulses, non-harmonic transient functions, and random vibrations. The students determine natural frequencies and mode shapes for multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) systems and use modal coordinates to solve for the response of MDOF systems. The course examines how to mitigate vibration via isolators and absorbers. This course also introduces how to solve nonlinear problems in vibrations.
