Topics in Global Literature

Catalog description

This course acquaints students with a variety of works by authors from the Global South–a conceptual space that combines regions across the world with similar histories of colonialism, imperialisms, exploitation, and deep inequalities. Students will study literary texts paying attention to how they interact with the larger society and its historical changes. Films may be used to give the students visual reference to what has been studied. Because this is a special topics class, the focus may be on any era, any thematic emphasis, or even on recent events. Multiple countries will be represented. Students will have the opportunity to work in groups researching and presenting on authors and works of their choosing.
