Catalog description

This course is meant to introduce the student to the history of modern popular music. As such a topic is quite broad, the course will focus on the evolution of popular music in a set number of genres over time. Close attention will be paid not only to the music itself, but also to the issues, ideas, and environments (in the United States and across the globe) that helped birth such musical forms: this course is interested in closely examining the context of popular music. At the same time, this course will cover both production and reception of music - and the way that technology is often utilized to disseminate music.
