Catalog description

This course examines the development of sectional identities in the United States from the period of the early republic and the social, political, economic, and cultural differences between the North and South that ultimately led to the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Also examined are the causes of the North’s victory in the Civil War, the rise of the Republican Party as a consequence of the debate over slavery, and the attempt by the Republicans to reshape the South after the Civil War during the period of Reconstruction.
