Catalog description

This course covers practical, advanced MATLAB™ programming, emphasizing the design, implementation, and testing of applications with features such as graphical user interfaces (GUIs), microcontroller-based data acquisition and control, and network communications. Students will learn to use advanced MATLAB data types such cell arrays, structs, and tables. Object-oriented programming (OOP), and sophisticated function creation, timers, and callbacks, and will also be covered as will MATLAB’s App Designer. This course is intended for students who have completed a semester programming course covering MATLAB, two courses covering some other modern language or similar familiarity with MATLAB or programming based on other experience. This is not an introductory programming course. The effective and responsible use of MATLAB’s Copilot AI features is integrated throughout the course. An AI assisted approach to programming will be stressed. Students will be encouraged to use AI tools to understand MATLAB features and generate code. Fundamental principles of generative AI operation will be covered, but the focus will be on AI application. The importance of verifying and validating AI generated content will be discussed. A major grade component in this course will be student-initiated term projects. Projects may be and typically are related to their individual interests or capstone design projects. Successful project completion typically requires effective AI use. Applied AI Integration: This course meets or exceeds MSOE’s Applied AI Integration guidelines for substantial coverage of Practical Application and for sufficient coverage of Foundational Knowledge and Critical Evaluation.
