Catalog description

This organic chemistry course is a continuation of Organic Chemistry I (CHM 2210) for students interested in future professional careers in medicine, dental school, pharmacy, and graduate degree programs. The introductory concepts of organic chemistry developed in CHM 2210 are advanced further for a deeper understanding at a mechanistic level. This understanding of organic reactions mechanisms will be useful in learning roles of organic molecules involved in various processes in living systems. The course also introduces principles of spectroscopic methods used in organic chemistry for the identification and characterization of organic compounds. It includes UV-visible, infra-red spectroscopy, and mass spectrometric methods. Students will also be introduced to industrial and commercial applications of organic molecules including synthetic polymers.
