Chemistry for the Life Sciences II

Catalog description

This is a survey course for healthcare professionals introducing the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry and biochemistry and is a continuation of Chemistry for Life Sciences I. Students will gain knowledge of concepts and perform hands-on laboratory experiments. Students will be introduced to functional group structures and reactions of hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, and amides. Students will learn about the structure and function of biomolecules, including enzymes and vitamins, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and proteins, and nucleic acids. Metabolism and energy production from carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins will be studied. The biochemical basis of medical conditions such as diabetes and ketoacidosis will be discussed.
