Catalog description
This course presents principles related to the selection and use of biomaterials. The course begins with topics in mechanics of materials and material science that are salient to biomaterials properties and applications. In addition to mechanical properties, other properties such as corrosivity and imaging characteristics are discussed. General characteristics and biomedical applications of metals, ceramics, polymers, and composite materials are covered. The course includes exploration of the biological tissue responses to implanted materials. Practical issues of incorporating biomaterials in medical devices are discussed, including testing methods, relevant medical device standards, and regulatory considerations. A course project explores interactions between materials, geometric features, and mechanical performance of biomedical implants through finite elements analysis along with interpretation of results in terms of implant success.
