World Music Sound and Structure

Catalog description

This course is a survey of several major music traditions/genres around the world and an introduction to the field of ethnomusicology. Students will focus on music analysis (the elements of timbre, texture, melody, rhythm, form, etc.) and anthropological concepts, such as identity, culture, field research, etc. ,in the broader effort of understanding music as human activity with social functions and as cultural expression.
