This lab/lecture course studies the microstructures of common ferrous alloys (steels and cast irons) and their relationship to chemical composition, thermal cycles and mechanical properties. Phase diagrams are used to understand microstructures. Lab methods covered include sample preparation, microscopic and macroscopic examination, and photography.
