Outdoor Wellness and Leadership

Catalog description
Using the National and State Park systems as the learning environment, students will explore the history and reasons for the establishment of the Park systems and focus on aspects of their own wellness as well as the wellness of outdoor spaces. The course instructors will look at the Parks through a creation/Creator lens, assessing the benefits and costs associated with the use and sustainment of the Park systems as well as the role of the parks in promoting well-being. Students will be challenged personally to build skills such as perseverance, resilience, and people -skills such as communication and cooperation with others different from themselves. Students will experience a camping trip, featuring time at a National and State Park; one-week minimum time camping required for all offerings. The camping trip will occur in the semester in which the student is enrolled. An additional fee is assessed at time of registration. Offered spring term or May Term. One or three semester hours.
