Catalog description

A capstone seminar designed to promote reflection, in-depth discussion, and collaborative action research. Designed to integrate all elements of the program, document program outcomes in the candidate portfolio, and verify program completion. Also includes topical presentations by Milligan and partner school faculty. Enrollment is limited to students admitted to the professional level of the teacher education program and approved to student teach. Corequisite with student teaching. Offered every term. One semester hour. EDUC 480/480M. Behavior Support for Students with Disabilities – A study of behavioral supports for students with emotional and behavioral differences in the school setting. A focus will be placed on the range of characteristics, co-occurring conditions, performance issues in the core academic content, and effects of emotional factors on learning among students with emotional and behavioral differences. Candidates will learn to conduct functional behavior assessments, assess social behaviors, and prepare functional behavior assessment reports. An emphasis will be placed on non-aversive techniques, prevention and intervention strategies, strategies to teach alternative behaviors, and the creation of behavior support plans. Field experience required. Offered fall term each year. Three semester hours. EDUC 483/483M. Methods of Instruction in Special Education – Neurobiological and medical factors of students with learning and behavioral disabilities, characteristics influencing reading, writing, and math performance, and education procedures and materials for teaching students with learning and behavioral disabilities will be covered.
