A course preparing secondary education students to integrate and organize the knowledge of the disciplines to fit the particular needs of students. Emphasis on assessment, planning, instructional strategies, and evaluation. Includes individualized instruction by a content area specialist on materials and methods specific to licensing areas. Field experience included. Offered spring term each year. Three semester hours. EDUC 438/438M. Methods for Teaching English Language Learners - A study of the characteristics of children who are English Language Learners (ELL), of the assessment of their literacy skills, and of literacy intervention strategies based on a review of the literature pertaining to ELL instruction. Relevant topics include: Establishing a classroom environment that is positive and welcoming to English language learners; establishing routines; communicating with ELL students; using simple sign language; using whole group strategies; guiding written expression; establishing peer supports; organizing volunteer programs. The course provides support to a “reflective and caring” teacher of English language learners. Prerequisite: Six hours of world language or language proficiency at the elementary level. Offered occasionally. Three semester hours.
