SOWK 604 introduces students to the social worker’s role in health care and the policy issues that impact practice. This course will provide a detailed exploration of social work practice across the continuum of healthcare services including health promotion, disease prevention and community based, acute, tertiary and end of life care. Particular attention is devoted to the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania and opportunities for social workers. Social work practice is explored within the context of the psychosocial consequences of illness, the structure of the healthcare delivery system, technological advances, changing economic and regulatory practices, as well as ethical, political and legal considerations. Reserved for MSW students and BASW ACCL students.
