Trauma, Grief and Loss

Catalog description

This course covers fundamental skills in assessing and conceptualizing traumatic stress reactions and grief processes as well as providing evidence-based treatments to those affected by traumatic events. The course material includes reading and discussion on the physiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral impact of trauma and grief, as well as an introduction to treatment techniques. Major grief and loss concepts will be addressed, including death and dying, end-of-life decision making, death and non-death related loss, traumatic death, grief and mourning. The course material is presented with consideration to the cultural and contextual factors that influence the onset, course, and outcomes of psychological distress that results from exposure to trauma and grief. Both didactic and experiential methods of instruction will be used to expose students to the vast body of knowledge covering this area.
