Osteopathic Principles and Practice I

Catalog description

This course is the first in a 3-course series introducing students to osteopathic clinical medicine with weekly lectures and laboratory experiences. Instruction includes basic history and physical examination skills, SOAP note and history & physical documentation, introduction to ultrasound, and the osteopathic structural examination. Where possible, components of the osteopathic history and physical examination covered in the course align with anatomical sciences curriculum. Students will learn the proper use of diagnostic equipment, as well as palpatory techniques, identification of anatomic landmarks, and diagnosis and treatment of somatic dysfunctions using case-based presentations carried through lecture and laboratory sessions. Near-peer table trainers, osteopathic scholars, standardized patients, and simulation are used to build a complete educational experience. Students are evaluated through written examinations, Standardized Patient Examination practicals, and Osteopathic Principles and Practice practicals.
