PLEASE READ: Through a partnership with Middlesex County's Division of History and Historic Preservation, this class focuses on Colonial U.S. History and requires students to participate in a minimum of two site visits to the East Jersey Old Town Village, located at 1050 River Rd in Piscataway. Students will be expected to reach the site for class on their own. The site visits will be scheduled during scheduled class time.

This course explores the history of the U.S. prison system from the end of the Civil War to today, uncovering how incarceration has shaped-and been shaped by-race, power, and justice. From convict leasing and chain gangs to mass incarceration and reentry, we examine the policies and practices that continue to influence American society. Through engaging discussions, films, and primary sources, students will critically analyze the enduring impact of the carceral state on individuals, families, and communities.
