HON notes: This course explores the history of the U.S. prison system from the end of the Civil War to today, uncovering how incarceration has shaped-and been shaped by-race, power, and justice. From convict leasing and chain gangs to mass incarceration and reentry, we examine the policies and practices that continue to influence American society. Through engaging discussions, films, and primary sources, students will critically analyze the enduring impact of the carceral state on individuals, families, and communities.
