This course examines the art and architecture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through the lens of preservation. Focusing on New Jersey as a case study, students explore how modernist buildings, public artworks, and cultural landscapes have shaped the state's visual and civic identity, and why many of these sites remain overlooked, controversial, endangered, or have even been destroyed. Students will evaluate real preservation challenges and consider how artistic, historical, and social values intersect when determining what from the recent past deserves protection. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to real preservation projects by researching art and architecture for nominations to the Black Heritage and Women's Heritage Trails in New Jersey, and meet leading artists, architects, and preservation leaders in the state.
