Diagnostic and Prescriptive Reading with Reading Practicum

Grounded in the Science of Reading, this course examines the use of formal and informal assessment practices to design, evaluate, and deliver effective literacy instruction and intervention for students in grades one through eight. Teacher candidates will learn to select, administer, and interpret a range of literacy assessments to inform data-based decision-making and instructional planning within Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Emphasis is placed on understanding reading development, identifying and supporting struggling readers, and applying assessment results to guide differentiated, evidence-based instruction in reading and writing. Through a supervised fifteen-hour field experience, candidates will assess an individual student, analyze assessment data, and design targeted instructional strategies to support the learner’s growth as a strategic reader and writer. Offered in alternating 8-week terms in the accelerated pathway. Offered every Spring semester in the traditional 16-week format.
