Methods of Reading in the Intermediate Grades

Catalog description

Grounded in the Science of Reading, this course builds a framework for understanding literacy development and instruction for intermediate learners in grades four through eight, with a focus on the developmental and instructional implications of fluent reading, vocabulary acquisition, comprehension, and writing. Major skill domains that contribute to the development of written expression are explored through the principles of explicit and systematic instruction. Candidates will study and practice evidence-based strategies for vocabulary, comprehension, and writing instruction, including text selection, comprehension strategy instruction, and content-area literacy. Attention is given to supporting diverse learners through assessment-driven instruction and effective scaffolding practices. Oklahoma Academic Standards are aligned with course content. A supervised five-hour field experience provides opportunities to apply research-based instructional approaches in intermediate literacy settings. This course is offered every term in an 8-week accelerated format and every spring in the 16-week traditional format.
