Dance as Culture

Catalog description

This course is designed for students interested in an overview of the history of human movement in the United States as seen through the lens of race, class, and gender. It is a lecture- and discussion-based course in which students will reflect on the implications of these theories as they relate to ancient and contemporary dance forms, as well as their own interactions with these systems. The class will focus on three main areas: context/theory, ancient history, and contemporary history. Dance as Culture requires that students learn and work with classmates in an open and collaborative environment, while deepening their understanding of how to critically evaluate the context and implications of traditional structures of oppression in dance in the United States. PA-3A, PA-4A. Prerequisite: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing or by the permission of the instructor.
