Explores instructional principles and methods for integrating literacy across the content areas in grades 7-12. We will examine the theory and practice of literacy learning and instruction within and across content areas. TCE 446/546A focuses on disciplinary and interdisciplinary uses of and purposes for oral and written texts in school settings. This course will be an extended effort to explore three questions: (1) What is literacy? (2) How can secondary school teachers support the literacy development of their students? and (3) How can writing, reading, speaking, and listening strategies enhance content-area learning in secondary schools? The primary purpose of TCE 446/546A is to provide prospective and current secondary school teachers with an understanding of adolescent literacy and literacy learning in order to help them develop research-based strategies for integrating writing and reading into their classes to support student content learning and literacy development. Students taking this course will be math, science, social studies, world language, art or music education majors.
