Foundations of Literacy for primary and middle childhood education

Foundational literacy knowledge lays the building blocks for effective and student-centered instruction in reading and writing. Grounded in current research on literacy, this course serves as a foundation for subsequent courses. More specifically, this course provides a research-based foundation in the theories of cognitive, socio-cultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development. The course presents key research and theories needed to understand how reading develops and effective methods and strategies used to foster literacy skills with diverse learners, including young children through young adults and those with varied backgrounds, identities, and needs. As a foundation course, this class is designed to expose students to all the different aspects of reading instruction, including Science of Reading topics.
