Neurobiology and Psychopharmacology for PMHNPs

Catalog description
The neurobiological basis of mental health and illness, along with the pharmacologic treatment of psychiatric disorders, will be explored across the lifespan. This course builds upon foundational knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology within the context of mental health and illness. The etiology of major mental health disorders will be examined as a basis for the application of pharmacology. Psychopharmacologic principles and evidence-based practices for treating mental disorders across the lifespan will be analyzed. Clinical indications, safety considerations, and monitoring parameters for commonly used psychotropic medications will be discussed. Risks, benefits, and treatment outcomes will be evaluated in the context of development of evidence-based, patient-centered treatment plans. Prerequisite: NSG 602 , NSG 604 , and NSG 606 .
