MTH 143
Technical Calculus
Miami University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course introduces differential and integral calculus with applications in engineering technology and advanced manufacturing. It integrates key technical calculus concepts, including function analysis, differentiation, optimization, integration, motion, mathematical reasoning, and the effective use of technology. Emphasis is placed on understanding rates of change, accumulation, optimization, and motion, as well as applying technology for modeling and problem-solving. While algebraic techniques for limits, derivatives, and integrals are covered, the focus is on applied contexts, approximation, and interpretation rather than manual computation. Topics include function analysis, vectors, parametrization, projectiles, circular and harmonic motion, curve fitting, and optimization methods. Credit will be awarded for only one of the following courses: MTH 141 , MTH 143 , or MTH 151 . Not a prerequisite for MTH 251 . Prerequisite: MTH 124 or MTH 125 , or an ACT Math score of at least 27, or a SAT Math score of at least 640, or score of at least 17 on the Miami Math Placement Test.
