Capstone in Journalism

Catalog description

JRN 421 combines theory and practice in a capstone course that requires students to integrate their understanding of journalism with the broader liberal education they have undertaken through the Miami Plan. Students initiate hands-on journalistic projects of their own design that require experiential learning via information-gathering beyond the classroom; critical analysis of sources and evidence; and the production of a work of journalism significant to wider communities, all with the aim of deepening public understanding and enhancing public and private decision-making about real-world problems and issues. Students' work will be evaluated by professional standards. They will seek publication of their final productions. Each project concludes with a reflective essay by the student assessing their work process; final journalistic product(s); the potential impact of their work; and the ways in which their work reflects their entire liberal education.
