Catalog description

Explores geochemical reactions governing the chemical composition of Earth's natural waters. The class includes discussions of thermodynamics, kinetics, acid/base reactions, oxidation/reduction reactions, organic geochemistry, and environmental mineralogy. Students will be introduced to geochemical modeling and be able to use it to predict consequences of water-rock interactions. Students will also learn basic skills in water sampling and field measurements. Prerequisite: GLG 211 or permission of instructor.
