What makes a “family”? How are families impacted by the world around them? FSW 261 is an introduction to the field of family science, highlighting the diversity of family experiences that exist, emphasizing the U.S. experience while drawing upon global understandings. We investigate how families are and have been influenced by historical, sociocultural, economic, and political contexts, as well as the various ways in which family systems change over time. This course is ideal baseline training for social workers and family life educators and is relevant for any student interested in learning more about how families operate, common challenges families face, and approaches for addressing those problems.
