This course, ENT 252 , provides an in-depth exploration of modern manufacturing methods, specifically focusing on the principles and applications of additive and subtractive manufacturing processes. Students will learn the fundamental differences between these two core methodologies: subtractive manufacturing, which removes material from a solid block to create a part (e.g., CNC machining, milling, and turning), and additive manufacturing (often called 3D printing), which builds a part layer-by-layer from raw materials. The curriculum will cover the various technologies within each category, including the materials used, design considerations, and the advantages and disadvantages of each process. Emphasis will be placed on how these two approaches are often used in a hybrid manufacturing workflow to optimize production for prototypes and finished parts in industries like aerospace, automotive, and consumer goods. Upon completion, students will be able to select the most appropriate manufacturing process for a given application, considering factors such as part complexity, material properties, production volume, and cost. Format: 2 Lectures, 1 Lab. Prerequisite: ENT 152 or instructor approval.
