This is the first course in a two-semester course sequence and concurrent internship. This sequence is a dynamic blend of classroom learning and real-world experience. In Foundation Internship Experience I, learners will lay the foundation and begin to weave academic coursework and internship experiences together to actively demonstrate the linking of theory to practice. Learners will sharpen their critical thinking by examining ethical challenges in the internship, beginning to navigate cultural humility, and developing an emerging professional identity rooted in social work knowledge, values, and skills. Learners are expected to demonstrate growth towards all 9 core social work competencies (CSWE EPAS 2022). Under the supervision of a professional social worker in the community, learners will simultaneously complete agency internship hours (at least 200 hours per semester is required by CSWE accreditation standards) with diverse and/or historically discriminated individuals, families, groups, communities, and/or organizations. The total number of hours will be determined by the Office of Social Work Internships and informed by agency, programmatic, societal, environmental, and/or policy-related factors.
