Catalog description

Students learn the process of collecting pertinent data about client or client systems and theirenvironment and appraising the data as a basis for making decisions regarding diagnosis,treatment, and/or referral of chemical dependency clients. Instruction on coordinating and prioritizing client treatment goals and working with other services, agencies, and resources toachieve those treatment goals is included. This course also includes practice in assessing andmanaging a case. This includes the development of sample case records and utilization ofwritten client records to guide and monitor services with emphasis on the development of thesocial history and intake, initial assessment, case reviews and consultation, individual treatmentplan with measurable goals and objectives, documentation of progress, on-going assessment,and discharge planning including appropriate referrals. Confidentiality of client information andrecords as defined in 42 CFR Part 2 is addressed. The strengths and weaknesses of various levelsof care and the selection of an appropriate level for clients is studied. Basic information on twoor more objective screening instruments for alcohol/drug disorders, such as the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI),Addiction Severity Index (ASI), Mortimer-Filkins, and others are studied.
