Helping Skills and Techniques

Catalog description

In this course, students practice basic interpersonal skills such as appropriate self-disclosure, active listening, and constructive challenging. Students apply professional helping skills on a one-to-one basis. Students demonstrate at least four of the following skills and techniques: active listening, reflective feedback, summarizing, self-disclosing, displaying empathy,confronting, establishing rapport, and communicating at the client's comprehension level.Students exhibit skills through video taped role-plays, in-class role-plays, counseling critiques, case studies and other experiential exercises.
