Hours-of-Service

Hours-of-Service instruction will help drivers and carriers to be compliant while maximizing the available hours through a full understanding of how the limits affect safety and productivity. Instruction on hours-of-service is based on regulations contained in Title 49, Part 395, of the Code of Federal Regulations for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These regulations limit the amount of time drivers can spend behind the wheel of a commercial motor vehicle, require periodic interruptions of driving, and require drivers to complete a daily record of duty status, or log, of their activity. Section 9: Course Descriptions 312 The regulations for hours-of-service for commercial motor vehicles involved in interstate commerce applies to two areas:  Hours-of-service, which is the number of hours drivers are allowed and must be accountable for to drive and/or work in a given period of time.  The driver's daily log or record of duty status, which is what drivers use to keep track of their hours of service. The log is usually created through an electronic logging device, but may be created manually, depending on the operation. The training will be conducted in a campus or online classroom. The knowledge exams, at a minimum, consist of the following: basic knowledge of hours-of-service, limitations, recording or documentation of hours, exceptions, electronic logging basics, and completion of the manual log. A minimum average score of 80% is required to pass the course.
