Advanced Seminar in Systemic-Relational Practice: Contemporary Issues & Context
Mercy University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The advanced professional development seminar course explores contemporary issues impacting families and how emerging contexts challenge clinical practice for systemic practitioners. Today we face the cross-currents of global crises such as climate change, mass migration, pandemics, political unrest, social injustices, the AI revolution and more. This course takes a critical approach—sociopolitical and systemic focus—to explore new practices that consider environmental issues, diagnostic privileges, discoveries in neuroscience, technological advancements, and/or other topical issues. These practices are shaped by our social, political, and economic contexts and impact professional development in couples and family therapy. Through a critical relational lens, the course enables students to develop professionally as adaptive and innovative practitioners in response to the evolving landscape of systemic practice.
