Catalog description

This course introduces students to a variety of literary texts (for example stories, essays, poems, lyrics, and more) written by women. Attention will be paid to writings by women of diverse cultures, countries, and heritages. Students will consider the relationship between women’s writing and the prevailing traditions and cultures in which those writings were produced; including ways in which various women’s writings might challenge or uphold certain cultural traditions. Students will study different ways in which women use literary texts to express and explore themselves and situations in the world. An overall emphasis of the course will be on valuing, supporting, and celebrating literature by women.
