ENGL 212
Science Fiction
Mercy University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Science Fiction, also known as Speculative Fiction, wonders about the future by recognizing and studying the patterns of the world today. Sci-Fi is therefore as much about the present as about the future; and it is almost always about the perils and adventures of change—the changes that the world, society, individuals, and humanity will undergo as a result of trends in culture, science, and technology. Sci-Fi includes environmental futurism, afrofuturism, visionary fiction, post-apocalyptic fiction, cyberpunk stories, and other types of stories/films that prompt self-reflection and ask “what if?” in creative and imaginative ways. Students in this class will wonder together what Sci-Fi reveals about us, about our world and lives today, and about what power Sci-Fi might have to help us navigate our lives and the future meaningfully.
