Catalog description

This course will examine the ways in which childhood, including infancy through adolescence, as a social construct, has been conceptualized over time and how such shifting conceptualizations have impacted theories of teaching and learning. Connections between childhood and social, cultural, and economic contexts, such as school/education and family, that shape the experiences of developing humans will be explored. In addition, the course will include an examination of contemporary issues and cross-cultural theories of childhood, development, and socialization, with a particular focus on educational contexts, challenging the notion that childhood is a universal experience.
